What is meningitis (meningitis)
Meningitis, also known as meningitis, is a serious infection that causes inflammation of the three thin membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, called the meninges. Meningitis is a medical emergency.
Meningitis is caused by a bacterial infection, viral infection, or fungi. Meningitis may also develop when the fluid surrounding the brain's membranes becomes infected with disease-causing microorganisms.
Types of meningitis
Meningitis can be divided into several types, based on the pathogen. Types include:
Bacterial meningitis
Bacterial meningitis is bacterial meningitis caused by bacteria, and is considered the most serious type of meningitis. There are types of vaccines that help prevent some types of bacterial meningitis.
Viral meningitis
Viral meningitis is serious, but less serious than bacterial meningitis. Vaccines are available to protect against some types of viral meningitis.
Fungal meningitis
Fungal meningitis is rare.
Parasitic meningitis
Parasitic meningitis can be caused by various parasites, but is less common than bacterial and viral meningitis.
Amoebic meningitis
Amoebic meningitis, also called primary meningoencephalitis, is a rare but very serious infection.
Non-infectious meningitis
Noninfectious meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges that may result from certain diseases, such as lupus erythematosus, head injuries, brain surgery, or from certain medications.
Is meningitis contagious?
The bacteria and germs that cause bacterial meningitis can be transmitted from one person to another through exposure to droplets of respiratory secretions when sneezing, kissing, or coughing. Some types of germs can also be transmitted to people through food. But in general, the spread of bacterial meningitis and its transmission from one person to another depends on the type of bacteria causing the infection.
As for the types of viruses that may cause viral meningitis, it is possible to transmit it from an infected person to a person in close contact with him, but despite this, this is not common.
